Galata Wind continues to show its strong performance

Galata Wind Energy, which generates 100 clean and renewable energy at its wind and solar power plants, delivered strong financial performance in Q3 2022 and captured significant increase in its cash flow. Despite the ongoing global energy crisis and macroeconomic uncertainties, the company increased its revenues by 161 to TL 863 million in the first nine months of 2022.

Galata Wind, the wind and solar power generation company, announced its Q3 2022 results. According to the latest financial statements, Galata Wind maintains its strong performance with continued economic growth. In Q3 2022, Galata Wind preserved its EBITDA margin at 85 while capturing a net debt/EBITDA ratio of 0.03. In addition to growing its revenues by 161 to reach TL 863 million, Galata Wind also posted TL 705 million in profits before tax with an increase of 466. The company's balance sheet improved by 42 year on year.

    Clean energy investments continue

The company, which has realized its growth vision much faster since the public offering, aims to increase its current 269 MW portfolio to 500-550 MW in the near future. Accordingly, the request for coordinating the auxiliary source area in the generation license of the hybrid project at Galata Wind's Taşpınar Power Plant was approved by EMRA. In addition, Galata Wind, which has an annual electricity generation capacity of approximately 800 GWh, was also approved to increase its total installed capcaity of 67.2 MWm/60 MWe to 80.2 MWm/73 MWe at Taşpınar Wind Power Plant (WPP). Thus, it will be possible to add two new turbines to Taşpınar WPP, which continues its activities with 14 turbines. In addition to these, the Company has taken over the license for a wind power plant with an installed capacity of 9 MWm/6.8 MWe to operate in the province of Muğla.

Charging toward targets with sustainable and green financing

As part of its efforts to invest more in renewable energy to reach its sustainable development goals, Galata Wind filed an application with the CMB for the issuance of bonds/other instruments as a green financing instrument to be sold to qualified investors and/or private placement for a total nominal value not to exceed TL 500,000,000.

Galata Wind signed a loan agreement with the EBRD to receive a financing of US 45 million to support its investments. With the planned capacity increases, it will be possible to reduce approximately extra 80,000 tons of CO2 carbon emissions by generating an additional annual average of 150,000 MWh of electricity.

Burak Kuyan, CEO, Galata Wind, commented on the company's Q3 performance and the loan agreement signed with the EBRD: “This year, we became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, declaring our commitment to the ten principles. In line with our vision of integrating sustainability management into all our processes and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we will expand our renewable energy capacity with new investments and contribute further to the reduction of carbon emissions, which for us currently amount to 400,000 tons of CO2 every year. The loan that EBRD has provided will facilitate our efforts to reach our mid- and long-term renewable energy targets. We envision an even brighter future for clean energy companies like Galata Wind, which will play an increasingly more significant role in economic growth through a stronger global sustainability focus.”

  • Galata Wind receives 45 million from EBRD to finance renewable energy investments

Galata Wind receives 45 million from EBRD to finance renewable energy investments

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has provided Galata Wind with a 45 million loan to increase its renewable energy capacity. With this financing, Galata Wind will save 80,000 tons in CO2 emissions annually by generating approximately 150,000 MWh of renewable electricity per year through planned investments.

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development provided Galata Wind with 45 million in financing to increase its wind power generation capacity and support Turkey in transitioning to clean energy. Galata Wind will use this loan to finance its planned capacity increase projects in the wind farms currently in operation, further increasing the company’s total operational installed power. Galata Wind is a leading renewable energy investor in Turkey with a total installed power of 269 MW. The company currently operates 3 wind power plants and 2 solar power plants, generating nearly 800,000 MWh of electricity annually.

The installed power of the wind farms in Turkey is currently around 11 GW. On the other hand, Turkey has an estimated wind power generation potential of 40-50 GW, which is not yet fully utilized, with one reason being limited access to long-term financing. Aida Sitdikova, Director, Energy Eurasia MEA, Sustainable Infrastructure Group, EBRD, emphasized that the green agenda should be accelerated in Turkey, “These loans are effective in terms of enabling the private sector to work toward a renewable future. We are pleased to partner with Galata Wind on this project. We will continue to support renewable energy investors in Turkey.”

“EBRD loan will support our mid- and long-term renewable energy targets”

Burak Kuyan, CEO, Galata Wind, noted that the company has earned the trust of respected international financial institutions like EBRD with its performance: “As a company that generates clean and renewable wind and solar power, Galata Wind grew by 61 in 2021 and continued to deliver a successful financial performance in the first six months of 2022. We captured 188 year on year growth and recorded TL 518 million in revenues.

To elevate our successful performance, we aim to increase Galata Wind’s total installed power of 269 MW to 500-550 MW in the near future. And we intend to achieve this by investing in part in Turkey and in part in our surrounding regions and Europe. Our long-term aspiration is to become a global player by 2030. This year, Galata Wind became a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact, declaring its commitment to the ten principles. In line with our vision of integrating sustainability management into all our business processes and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we will expand our renewable energy capacity with new investments and contribute further to the reduction of carbon emissions, which for us currently amount to 400,000 tons of CO2 every year. The loan that EBRD has provided will support us in reaching our mid- and long-term renewable energy targets. We anticipate that clean energy companies like Galata Wind will play a more significant role in economic growth with an increasingly stronger global sustainability approach toward a brighter future. At Galata Wind, we will continue to invest in renewable energy.”

Galata Wind’s planned capacity increases to generate an additional 150,000 MWh of electricity annually will potentially reduce carbon emissions further by nearly 80,000 tons of CO2. The loan extended to Galata Wind expands EBRD’s efforts to promote the private sector’s participation in renewable energy generation and supports Turkey’s rapid transition to clean energy. As a major international financial institution, EBRD has invested more than €16.8 billion to finance 381 projects, mostly in the private sector in Turkey since 2009.

  • UNDP boosts business opportunities for women entrepreneurs and women’s cooperatives in Turkey

UNDP boosts business opportunities for women entrepreneurs and women’s cooperatives in Turkey

With support from Japan, UNDP organizes “matchmaking” event for leading Turkish companies and women-led businesses

Women’s cooperatives and women entrepreneurs had an opportunity to explore possible business deals with leading Turkish companies at a matchmaking event organized yesterday in Istanbul by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The gathering event was part of a larger collaboration on women’s entrepreneurship between UNDP and the General Directorate of Development Agencies in the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology, supported by US1.1 million in funding from the Government of Japan.

The business-to-business (B2B) event was attended by more than 40 representatives of leading retailers, manufacturers and e-commerce platforms from Turkey and 42 women from cooperatives and 19 Turkish and Syrian entrepreneurs from 36 provinces of Turkey.

“Our aim is to help enterprising women starting their own businesses to connect with the supply chains that are vital to reach big domestic and international markets,” said UNDP Resident Representative Louisa Vinton. “Women’s cooperatives and women-led firms have huge potential to improve the livelihoods and self-reliance of their members while supplying products for which we see there is demand on the market. But realizing this potential requires making connections, and that is what we expect today’s B2B matchmaking event to yield.”

“I do believe that our women should not only be employed but also have a presence as entrepreneurs. For this reason, we carry out special projects and develop policies for women's entrepreneurship. We implement many end-to-end support programs, from capacity building activities to branding and from marketing to access to finance. Business to Social Cohesion, which we developed in cooperation with UNDP and supported by the Japanese Government, was a great opportunity to put these designs into practice. We have made our policy development process practical,” said Ahmet Şimşek, Deputy General Director of Development Agencies at the Ministry of Industry and Technology.

During sector-specific matchmaking sessions, women had a chance to meet company representatives, pitch their products and services, and explore collaboration opportunities.

In addition, well-known women entrepreneurs Demet Sabancı, Şehadet Çitil and Sanabel Marandi shared their success stories with participants as inspiration for the business journeys ahead. A panel discussion featuring Pelin Özkan, the manager of Kapital Group; İzabela Erşahin, the founder of Bebemoss; Aslı Filinta, a fashion designer; and Musa Dağdeviren, the founder of Çiya Restaurant, provided advice to participants on how to cope with the current challenging global context. Topics discussed included the power of the local, the transformative effect of design, the driving forces behind fair commerce and e-commerce, customer relationship management, digitalization and new media landscape, all of which are essential for business success.

The B2B event is just one component of a project that has provided business development trainings and consultancy support to women entrepreneurs and women's cooperatives since December 2021. In addition to training, project participants will receive mentoring and grants to support their businesses. In addition, a study is under way to help market and promote locally sourced products. To that end, a website that publicizes traditional and local products and refers potential buyers to manufacturers will be developed.

Designed as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project aims to increase women’s participation in social and economic life by enhancing the business skills of women entrepreneurs and women’s cooperatives. The project reflects UNDP’s commitment to build the self-reliance of Syrian refugees while strengthening the resilience of host communities.
